Studio Diary: Day 9

Today we discovered that we can return all of our cans to the supermarket, walk away with 2 cases of beer and be paid 5 Euros. This country rules.

In other news, the quest for bigger guitars and vocals continues! We’ve found our highly necessary “balls” sound we use live and it’s added an enormous amount of whammo to the recordings. Success all round!

We’ve now tracked all the vocals for Murdocracy, possibly one of the best vocal performances we’ve ever heard from Julio, plus finished off Red’s vocals.

So we can keep the blogs more interesting (rather than just showing guitars and vocals!), we’ve decided to combine the next few days into one video. Please check Day 12 for the most recent video blog.

Studio Diary: Day 8

With Felix finished and Germany playing in the world cup today, he’s on BBQ duty. None of us believe in fate, but to turn up at the studio and see a BBQ outside was a great omen. We just needed the time to use it and today was that day!

We fed some of the locals (are you local?), pissed off the neighbours with the smoke and ate heartily. Today was a good day.

Of course, we did work on the album as well! More vocals and guitars, this time finding the right sound for some of the higher parts. We’re up to 11 guitars on one of the tracks now. Awesome.

Studio Diary: Day 7

It’s the day of Germany’s first game in the world cup. What better way to celebrate than a good old BBQ and a few beers? Well, some of us did, the rest of us carried on making the album! Vocals and guitars all day today.

Studio Diary: Day 6

After last nights failed attempt at Wolves, that was the main priority this morning. Felix is still suffering so it took us a few goes, but now we’ve got it nailed. Thankfully for him, that’s all he needs to do here. Sadly for him, the weather has now turned to rain. I believe that’s what we call Sod’s law.

With all the tracking finished, now we have a week to record vocals, overdub more guitars, and make even more whammo. Jon started working on some of the solos and spent many hours nailing the perfect tone for Clarity. Clarity is part two of Cave In from the Rising Tide EP. It’s an incredible late night listening track, so we insisted on recording it late at night to get the vibe. We can’t wait for you to enjoy it as much as we do.

Studio Diary: Day 5

After last nights tricky attempt at capturing Reconnect, we tried again this morning and nailed it rather quickly. It’s a great stripped down track with some classic illuminatus melodic riffery.

We’re re-recording Red from our Rising Tide of EP, and that’s up next. It’s one of our favourite illuminatus “headphones moments”, so its important we capture that again. And judging by how it already sounds, we’re doing well!

With those track done, it was time to start on Wolves, one of our newest tracks. Felix is still melting, and he ended up finishing early and going to bed with a blank look in his eyes, no water left in his body and the concentration of a grasshopper.

We tried, and failed once more. Time to double track guitars and create the true whammo sound whilst Felix puts his body back together.
